Recently, we hosted our annual Diverse Destinations Event, where students came together to share the exciting courses and pathways they are progressing on to after leaving Hereford Sixth Form College. Students joined us for a networking lunch, giving us the chance to hear first-hand about what they’re doing next.
Some standout examples of the variety of destinations include Liam, who is heading to Iowa, USA, to study Sport and Exercise Science, and Anna, who has secured a degree apprenticeship in Project Management with AtkinsRéalis and will be working in Westminster. Anna credits the Careers department as a key reason she secured such a competitive position, saying: ‘I attended insightful apprenticeship workshops with the Head of Careers. I would recommend HSFC to anyone, as it has given me the perfect balance of independence and guidance to allow me to create the exciting future that I want for myself.’
Alex has secured a degree apprenticeship with BAE Systems in Computer Science as a Software Engineer, and said that ‘the encouragement, support and interest from my Computer Science and Physics teachers’ really helped him succeed.
This year, our Arts and Performing Arts students have been spectacularly successful. Elora has received an offer from The Courtauld Institute of Art, while Chara is heading to the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama to study Production.
Our dancers and musical theatre applicants have also seen outstanding success, testament to the strength of Performing Arts training at college. All students highlighted the specialist support provided by Performing Arts staff as key to their achievements. Mia is going to the Northern School of Contemporary Dance and explained that ‘I had free time in the studio to work on what I needed. It was such a safe space.’
Lilie is heading to Morea, while Neive is progressing to the London Studio Centre and shared that ‘my teachers recognised what I needed and helped me trust my ability as a performer, especially when it came to auditions.’ Jack is off to the Emil Dale Academy and said, ‘I’m so grateful for the opportunities I’ve been given to develop my singing, acting and dance. I feel prepared for the next step in my professional training.’ Evie has received an offer from Italia Conti and explained that ‘College provided the perfect facilities for completing self-tapes and excellent UCAS support.’
Our STEM students have, as always, excelled in gaining places on highly competitive courses. Gemma has an offer to study Medicine at the University of Exeter, contributing to an overall offer rate of 90% offers (national average 26%), once again placing Hereford among the most successful centres for medical careers. Kai is heading to Nottingham to study Aerospace Engineering, Bea to Bristol for Neuroscience, and Alex to Oxford Brookes University for Motorsport Engineering.
Applications to highly competitive universities continue to be impressive. Miles is heading to Durham to study PPE, Joseph to Warwick for Mathematics, and Dan to Imperial for Economics and Data Science. Luke is taking a gap year before progressing to Imperial for Materials Science and Engineering and highlighted the value of teacher and alumni support, saying: ‘I received incredible support across every subject, including mock interview preparation. Whenever I had a problem, Careers would find the perfect person to support me.’
Chloe is going to study Architecture at Bath and said that ‘College opened my eyes to so many universities and helped me access two amazing summer programmes. Step-by-step lessons on the UCAS process were awesome!’ Sofia has secured a place at UCL to study History, while Jess is heading to Bristol for English Literature. Elliot will study Politics and International Relations with Study Abroad at Bristol and explained that ‘Reach especially helped me in narrowing down my choices of university.’
Another successful candidate, Coco, said: ‘My teachers went above and beyond to ensure my success, and made it so enjoyable. The Reach programme helped massively in consolidating my ambitions.’
Vicky Orsmond, Senior Progression Lead, said: ‘This event always shows the incredible breadth of our students’ interests. It’s wonderful to see students find their passions at Hereford, where the right teams support their ambitions to access the top courses and opportunities in the country—and abroad.’
