
Music Performance
Whether or not you decide to study music after A Level, this is an exciting course for any dedicated musicians.
Music Performance BTEC National Extended Certificate
This is a new course for September 2025 which can be taken either as a half (Certificate) or full (Extended Certificate)
qualification. The course is vocational with an emphasis on applied learning and is completed via four modules.
On this course you will study both music performance and develop an understanding of the music industry.

What does the course involve?
As part of the course, all students are offered 1-1 private music lessons with a specialist in their instrument/voice type. In addition, Music students are expected to enrol onto the Music Academy, which offers further performance training, performance opportunities, workshops, masterclasses and ensemble experience, which will positively impact performance achievement on the course.
Topics Covered Includes:
- Ensemble Music Performance
- Solo Performance, Improvising Music or Music Performance Session Styles
- Practical Music Theory and Harmony
- Professional Practice in the Music Industry
Music Academy
Music students are expected to enrol onto the Music Academy, which offers further performance training, performance opportunities, workshops, masterclasses and ensemble experience, which will positively impact performance achievement on the course.

Entry Requirements
- Demonstrable skill in at least one instrument/voice at Grade 4. If you do not have a grade in an instrument/voice, you can be auditioned for the course to ascertain current skill level; if you do not meet this requirement please discuss with the Music Department in advance of enrolment.
Trips
There are national and international tours with college ensembles, regular trips to universities and visits to some of the finest concert halls to meet professional musicians and hear set works.
Career path
This course will support learners develop the skills and understanding to progress into a wide range of higher education courses and employment. Examples of further education routes could be performing arts, music industry management or music performance.
Transferable skills that are developed on this course include cognitive and problem-solving skills; interpersonal skills such as communication, self-presentation, working collaboratively; and intrapersonal skills such as self-management, adaptability and resilience.
