The College was honoured to have been remembered in the estate of a parent of former Hereford Sixth Form College students in 2023. Glyn, who sadly passed away at the remarkable age of 90, lived a long and happy life and was deeply committed to the value of education.

All three of his sons—Simon, Ben and Andy—attended Hereford Sixth Form College between 1976 and 1988. Andy shared, “My father had a strong belief in the power of a good education and wished to leave a legacy to the College, which he regarded as a true ‘centre of excellence’ for students.” All three brothers fondly remember their time at the College, crediting it not only with academic success but also with forging lifelong friendships. Andy added, “The friendships made at college have endured and grown since those days.”

In keeping with Glyn’s wishes—and with the family’s full support—the College has established the Glyn Merrett Awards, providing book vouchers for students going on to study Maths or Physics at university. The aim is to ease the financial cost of essential textbooks and to encourage and support students as they continue their academic journey. This initiative is especially meaningful as both Andy and Ben were recipients of subject prizes during their time at the College in the 1980s.

The Glyn Merrett Awards will continue to inspire and support future generations of Maths and Physics students. The College is extremely grateful to Glyn and his family for their generosity and vision in creating this enduring legacy.
