Hereford Sixth Form College General Election Hustings 2024

Posted on 26th July 2024

Hereford Sixth Form College continued its long established tradition of hosting the candidates from the Hereford constituencies for a pre-election day hustings. Beginning in 2010, every General Election has seen a hustings held; 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2024.

The Performing Arts Centre was packed full for a special hour and a half session. Candidates from each party presented pitches should they be elected and then the candidates faced set questions from students on the three key areas of Environment/Sustainability, Healthcare and the Economy. The third part was an opportunity for the student audience to ask "free questions" with one for each candidate.

The event was a real success- and several people commented that it was "the best hustings of those I have been to." The round of applause at the end certainly showed how engaged our students are!

After the election, an online vote was held on where students could vote for which party they would like. (As our students come from far and wide - it was for party rather than constituency).

In total, 336 students voted. Out of those 336:

*131 voted Green
*92 voted Labour
*67 voted Reform
*27 voted Liberal Democrats
*16 voted Conservatives
*3 voted Mark Weadon

Big thanks to Marco, teacher of Politics and Enrichment Coordinator, for organising this year's hustings, Benjamin Reeves for the spectacular photography capturing the event and to all of our candidates, Dan Powell (Liberal Democrats), Joe Emmett (Labour), Jesse Norman (Conservative), Ellie Chowns (Green) and Mark Weadon (Independent) for taking part.
