The Careers Department was one of the most important and helpful services I experienced at Hereford Sixth Form College. Without them I would never have had the confidence to send off my university applications.

Careers Education

The Careers programme is delivered through the first and second year IMPACT Tutorial programmes. These cover issues relevant to all students including university, employment, gap years and the expanding range of higher and degree level apprenticeships which can lead to degree level qualifications.

Level 2 students studying a GCSE programme receive a tailored Careers programme consisting of Careers IMPACT tutorials advising on all post-GCSE options to include further education and apprenticeships and work-based learning opportunities. All Level 2 student are offered a 1-2-1 Careers Guidance interview with the designated Careers Adviser for their programme.

There are separate programmes to support gifted and talented students.

These programmes are run by specialist Level 6 qualified Careers Advisers who have developed a wealth of expertise in their areas of interest.

Students applying for employment or apprenticeships are supported individually in their applications by the Careers Adviser specialist in Work-Related Learning.

Universities and employers increasingly recognise the potential of students whose personal circumstances may have restricted achievement at school or college. This is called Widening Participation and students at HSFC are supported in this area by a Careers Adviser who can help to identify contextual offers, access programmes and opportunities for work experience.

Careers Guidance

This is concerned with an individual’s choices. These are explored initially through a one-to-one interview which allows students the opportunity to look at ideas, discuss action planning and goal setting. Students can self-refer or use the drop-in Careers sessions.

The Careers Department Administrative Assistant is always on hand to help and can be contacted on 01432 355166 or email careers@hereford.ac.uk.

Nerys Evans is the Careers Leader and Head of Careers and can be contacted on 01432 355166 or email careers@hereford.ac.uk.

I wouldn’t have had a clue what to do for university. Careers guide you through it and are very helpful.

Resources

A range of online careers resources are available to students including Unifrog and eclips. Students are encouraged to use these resources in their own time as well as during the lessons.

All Careers IMPACT session material and shared careers resources can be found in the dedicated Careers TEAMs – All Students (Managed)

There are subject reading lists in The Careers Department (A059) and additional careers related reading materials in the main college Library.

Work Experience

Here at Hereford Sixth Form College, each student can gain real-life experience in their chosen field through work placements, virtual work experience plus trips and visits to local employers.

All first year students take part in IMPACT Week which takes place each June allowing them the time to go out into work experience placements, take part in Enrichment Activities on college campus, gaining essential skills for the future.

Working closely with both local and national employers we aim to create valuable opportunities that inspire ambition, shape career goals and achieve a meaningful experience for both our students and employers.

For any enquiries relating to work experience please contact our work experience coordinator: workexperience@hereford.ac.uk.

Support for Parents & Carers

The Careers Department recognises the key role parents play in helping students consider their career choices.

With this in mind, recorded webinars are made available in the Spring term to inform parents and carers of Post-18 opportunities, to include Higher Education and Apprenticeships. Termly newsletters are emailed to keep parents fully informed and parents/carers are very welcome to contact the Careers Department if they have any questions: careers@hereford.ac.uk
